With a Fine Arts degree and Honours in Marine Science, she combines scientific insight with artistic detail to create lifelike illustrations inspired by her experiences as a scuba diver, free diver, and underwater photographer. Through her brand Drawn of the Sea, Alexandra aims to inspire a deeper connection to the marine world and advocate for its protection.
Alexandra Thornton is the artist behind Drawn of the Sea, a creative brand devoted to capturing the beauty, fragility, and wonder of marine life through the intricate medium of coloured pencil. With a background in both science and art—holding an Honours degree in Marine Science alongside a Fine Arts degree—Alexandra brings a uniquely informed perspective to each of her detailed, lifelike illustrations.
Having drawn for as long as she can remember, Alexandra has spent the past seven years dedicated exclusively to marine subjects, blending her lifelong love of the ocean with her artistic craft. A passionate ocean advocate, scuba diver, free diver, and underwater photographer, she finds her inspiration beneath the surface—documenting real encounters with sea creatures that later become the focus of her work.
Through Drawn of the Sea, Alexandra’s mission is to connect viewers to the ocean’s extraordinary inhabitants, foster appreciation for marine
ecosystems, and inspire conservation through art that educates, engages, and evokes emotion.
